Oxford University and SRNSFG Joint International Conference on Georgian Studies

On July, 16, 2018, The Oxford University and SRNSFG Joint International Conference on Georgian Studies, was held in National Parliamentary Library of Georgia. The international conference aims to discuss achievements and future perspectives of the Joint research progamme of the SRNSFG and the Oxford University. Furthermore, this event focused on presentation the research findings in the fields of Humanities and Social-political sciences and supporting communication and collaboration opportunities between the local and international researches. The conference hosted researchers in the field of Georgian Studies, grant holders of the SRNSFG and Oxford University joint research programme and other calls of the successful participants and stakeholders.

Meeting with the Clarivate Analytics Representative

On July 9, the SRNSFG deputy director, Mr. Jaba Samushia met the head of the educational programmes department of the international electronic publishing company Clarivate Analytics – Mr. Valentin Bogorov. At the meeting the attendees discussed various details of collaboration. For your information, according to the agreement between SRNSFG and the international electronic publishing company Clarivate Analytics, consortium member organizations have gained access to the products of Clarivate Analytics (Web of Science and Derwent Innovation). Consortium consists of 14 organizations: public and private universities, Georgian National Academy of Sciences and Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Presentation of the Final Report of the Horizon 2020 Policy Support Facility – Specific Support to Georgia

Presentation of the final report of the Horizon 2020 Policy Support Facility was held on June 14, 2018 at 14:00 at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, auditorium # 107. Policy Support Facility  implies elaboration of recommendations by independent, high-ranking international experts in order to strengthen Georgia's Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) system. The visit is implemented during  October, 2017 – May, 2018  on the basis of the request of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia to the European Commission. Two missions have been successfully implemented within the framework of the Policy Support Facility-Specific support to Georgia ( December 2017  and  February 2018).  During the visits, international experts held meeting with different stakeholders including the State and Private sector, representatives of industry and academia from various institutions/organizations. The thematic meetings within the framework of the visits included the following issues: Support in identification of promising research fields; Measures for narrowing the gap between research and industry/business; Proposal for the performance-based funding of research entities.   It is noteworthy that Cristina Russo, Director of International Cooperation, Directorate General for Research and Innovation, European Commission, paid an official visit to Georgia. She welcomed the audience with the keynote speech and highlighted the importance of STI system development and Policy Support Facility. The event was opened by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Dr. Alexander Tevzadze. Opening remarks have been also made by the Vice rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Dr. Aleksandre Tskiskaridze and the Director General of SRNSFG, Ms. Manana Mikaberidze. The experts’ panel presented their report and recommendations based on two visits and comprehensive research of the Georgian STI system. The panel of the independent high-ranking international experts: Co-chairs: Michael Schlich t - Former Director on national and international Science Policies and Krzysztof Gulda - independent expert, Council Member of the National Centre for Research and Development in Poland, advisor to the polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Manfred Spiesberger (Rapporteur):  Senior researcher at Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) in Austria, political scientist specialized in R&D and innovation policies in Eastern Europe, in evaluations and impact assessments, and foresight; Maria Nedeva - Professor of Science and Innovation Dynamics and Policy at the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), the University of Manchester and a long-standing member of the Manchester Institute for Innovation Research and Anna Kaderabkova - Executive and research director of Centre for Innovation Studies at University of Economics and Management, Prague (Czech Republic). General note from the panel in the report: Georgia is a leader in facilitating business activities, but a laggard in facilitating research and innovation activities. For the benefit of the Georgian STI System, the panel strongly advises ‘ Strengthen 4C for Georgia: Coordination, concentration, collaboration, coherence. Agreement on cooperation

Cooperation agreement was signed between the SRSNFG and the National Food Agency in frames of the grant call for “Halymorpha Halys Elimination State Programme 2018”. The grant call for “Halymorpha Halys Elimination State Programme 2018” of 2018 will be announced in June 2018. Facing the social-economic challenge of the Government - Halyomorpha Halys elimination and addressing agricultural issues, caused by its dissemination, through conducting scientific-technological research; facilitation of innovative scientific research, focused on solving difficulties caused by Halyomorpha Halys; seeking for new knowledge, methods and innovative technological decisions; theoretical and experimental analysis of addressing problems through sharing best international experience.

Meeting with the representatives of the Ministries of Georgia in terms of Research promotion and commercialization

On June 11, at 16:00 LEPL Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, organized the workshop with representatives from different Ministries and public institutions. The workshop aimed to promote collaboration between the State institutions, private and industrial sector in different topics such as: promoting the problem-oriented research; development of Applied Research; commercialization of the scientific research; supporting collaboration with the scientific-research institutions of the private sector. It is noteworthy, that since 2016 Georgia is an associated country to EU’s research and innovation framework program “Horizon 2020” , which supports scientists, research institutions, small and medium size enterprises to make a large-scale and high-budget project proposals with European and other colleagues coming from different states, in order to receive funding. "Horizon 2020" focuses on cooperation between scientific and private sector; research projects development in response to a specific public challenges; promoting research activities oriented on commercialization and etc. It should be noted that, according to the European Commission's Communications and Reports, the next Framework Program for Research and Innovation ( EU Framework Program 9 ) will pay more attention to the business sector and scientific field. Coming out of the information mentioned above, workshop held discussion on following issues: Grant call Applied Research , administered by SRNSFG: Identifying and outlining up-to-date topics for considering in the concept of the call; Introducing Georgia to the upcoming Framework Program of the European Union in Research and Innovation (9 th Framework Program): Considering and adopting present social challenges and economic capabilities in the Work Programmes of 9th Framework Program; Utilization of promising potential of LEPL - Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation as an institution with experience of grant call administration. Meeting with the representatives of the Ministries of Georgia was held in the format of the round table, where participants stated their points of view and discussed prospects of the future cooperation.
