INFORMATION DAY

On February 20, 2018, the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia held information day at the foundation conference room, which was attended by interested figures for the SRNSFG-DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) joint call “Rustaveli-DAAD Joint Fellowship Programme”. The SRNSFG and DAAD representatives provided the audience with detailed information about call regulations and answered their questions.

Georgian Diaspora Workshop

Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia in cooperation with the EaP PLUS Project, funded by the EU Framework programme Horizon 2020, organized an international scientific event- Georgian Diaspora Workshop on February, 17, 2018 at the hotel Courtyard by Marriott in Tbilisi. The event was attended by around 60 participants, and the targeted audience was selected in accordance with the Societal Challenges reflecting Georgia’s priorities and Diaspora’s potential (Major focus on Health, Biology, Alternative Energy sources). Major aim of the event was support in identification cooperation opportunities in fame of Horizon 2020 between successful Georgian scientists abroad and scientist, students and SME representatives residing in Georgia. The event was divided into three sessions, out of which the speakers made presentations regarding Horizon 2020 funding opportunities and their professional background during the 1 st session : Zaal Kokaia , Professor and Director of Lund Stem Cell Center, Lund University, Sweden – European Research Council, Grant calls and funding opportunities ; David Prangishvili- Professor at the  Pasteur Institute of Paris , France (Archaea, virology) –International Cooperation opportunities, participation in Horizon 2020  funded projects; Guram Khelashvili – PhD in Alternative Energy Sources from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology , Research and Development Department at Strem Chemicals, Inc – International Cooperation opportunities for Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs); (including opportunities in H2020); David Tskhakaya- PhD in theoretical Physics, Vienna University of Technology , Austia – International cooperation opportunities for Georgian scientists, Horizon 2020 funded project EUROFusion; Meri Rogava- young scientist, Biomedical Sciences, Universität Bonn , Germany – Horizon 2020 work programme , opportunities for the consortia building in participation to H2020 projects; Khatuna Kakhiani – Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, PhD in Theoretical Physical Chemistry, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany - Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) –opportunities for Georgian scientists; Second session of the workshop had rather practical value and was moderated by the speakers. Each group identified various important issues related to Horizon 2020 such as project writing, partner search, consortia building and other opportunities for Georgian scientists, SME representatives etc. Third session (mini brokerage event) was conducted in more of a mini brokerage event format where participants enlarged their networking opportunities, expressed their opinion and exchanged information regarding participation in international projects. The very interactive working sessions were successfully conducted and the participants gained immense knowledge regarding Horizon 2020 funding opportunities and identified future collaboration capabilities.

SRNSFG International Policy Board Meeting

Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia hosted VI International Policy Board Meeting on 15-16 February, 2018. International Policy Board is the collegial body of the foundation with Georgian and international scientists and representatives of the Government of Georgia. IPB holds meetings twice a year and discusses the foundation mission and policy, supervises foundation’s activities. Besides, the board defines strategic priorities and monitors the Foundation’s activity plan. International Policy Board meetings will last for two days. Representatives of the Foundation will present and discuss: New Programme Portfolio and 2018 Action plan (Budget and programmes, International cooperation, Science Communication, evaluation schemes, Efficacy evaluation, GMUS, Strategy of the Ministry of Education and Science, Science, Innovation and Technology (STI) System and related topics; large-scale STI projects- linkage to the programmes administered by the Foundation, policy towards DUBNA and CERN, 2019 challenges and new schemes, programmes and grant monitoring; participation in the EU framework programme for Research and Innovation “Horizon 2020”. (participation schemes- PSF, EU twinning).  On February 16, the International Policy Board will finalize winter meetings, summarize identified topics and issues and will provide recommendations for the next VII meeting.

Training of the new grants management system (GMUS)

On February 14, in the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation was held a training for base users in new grants management system (GMUS). Representatives of different institutions were invited at the meetings. Grant Management Unified Electronic System (GMUS) will simplify receiving applications and will assist both scientists and experts in profile, competitions and expertise, as well as fund management of grants and monitoring projects.

European Regional meeting of the Global Research Council

On November 22-23, 2017, European regional meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC) was held in Stockholm, Sweden. The meeting was hosted by the Swedish Research Council For Sustainable Development. National science foundations from the EU Member States and the associated countries of EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020 attended the Regional meeting. Georgia was represented by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSFG), as the list of participants included the Director General of the Foundation, Manana (Mako) Mikaberidze and the Deputy Director General Nino Gachechiladze. Two following topics were discussed during the meeting: Science Diplomacy; Peer-Review The meeting aimed to strengthen the collaboration between internationally recognized foundations and agencies which fund scientific research, to emphasize the close cooperation between science and diplomacy and to strengthen the communication between fields of scientific and foreign policy.  In this context, special emphasis was put on the sustainability of international cooperation and on sharing economic interests and the necessary infrastructure for joint scientific activities. The Fund's representatives discussed the criteria of expert assessment that are essential for bilateral trusts in cooperation between financing institutions, as well as for effective and transparent administration of joint programs. Beside this, the European funds participating in the meeting formulated a new vision for the 2018’s GRC Annual Meeting, which will be held in May, 2018 and will be hosted by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and National Science Foundation of Korea. Participants of two days international event were the representatives of leading European Scientific Foundations from Sweden ( Swedish Research Council ), Switzerland ( Swiss National Science Foundation ),  Poland ( National Science Centre of Poland ), Norway ( The Research Council of Norway ), United Kingdom ( University of Exeter ), United States of America ( American Association for the Advancement of Science ), Republic of Ireland ( Science Foundation Ireland ),  Germany  (DFG,  German Research Foundation ), Turkey  ( TUBITAK - The scientific and technological research council of Turkey ), Azerbaijan  ( Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan ), Russia ( Russian Foundation for Basic Research ), Slovakia ( Slovak Research and Development Agency ), Luxemburg ( Luxembourg National Research Fund ), Italy ( National Institute for Nuclear Physics ), Spain ( Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Secretary of State for Research, development and innovation ), Israel ( Israel Science Foundation ), Slovenia ( Slovenian Research Agency ), Croatia ( Croatian Science Foundation ), Czech Republic ( Czech Science Foundation ), also the  representatives from European Research Council and the board of The EU framework program for research and innovation „ Horizon2020 “. Among  the representatives of the European Regional Meeting were: Dr. Sandeep Sandhu-the representative of the United Kingdom`s Research Center and executive of CRC supporting group; Mrs. Maud Evrard - representative of European Science and GRC; Dr. Marga Gual Soler - representative of American Association for the Advancement of Science ; Prof. Jane Elliot-representative of  University of Exeter etc.  There was also panel discussion about Science Diplomacy with the representative of Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andres Throedson, secretary general of Formas and the representative of Sweden in  IPCC Prof. Markku Rummukainen and the representative of royal institute of technologies Dr. Lize-Marie van der Watt Internal workshops were held during the meeting and the representatives of European foundations discussed about the issues related to science and diplomacy and peer review. Internal meetings were held during the meeting for discussing European foundations’ vision in terms of the Science Diplomacy and Peer Review.

Info Day

On October 13, 2017 Ilia State University hosted a fifth group meeting for the grant Competition of Master’s Research Project Grant at auditorium 2017 in the building E. Info Day participants were given important information regarding terms and conditions of the grant project, and the coordinators answered the questions.
