ERC – Supporting Excellent Researchers all over Europe – Eastern Partnership Countries Regional Event in Tbilisi

On April 20-21, 2017 the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCAA) and the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation (SRNSF) co-organized regional celebratory events dedicated to the ERC’s 10 th anniversary. On 20 th of April, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a conference - Strengthening Eastern Partnership participation in ERC calls, that gathered ERC executive agency representatives, Georgian policy makers and implementers from relevant ministries, state agencies, research institutions and universities. STI stakeholders from Eastern Partnership (EaP)) countries, established scientists and young researchers from various Georgian research entities attended the conference. Some of the remarkable speeches during the conference were delivered by ERC Vice-president and Chair of the ERC Scientific Council on Widening European Participation – Prof. Eva Kondorosi, the President of Academia Europea, former ERC Vice-president - Prof. Sierd Cloetingh, STI experts from the EU members states, prominent Georgian scientists residing abroad and representing leading research institutions worldwide. The international conference was followed by information day for potential applicants on April 21. Interested researchers were provided with practical and detailed information on ERC application procedures, evaluation criteria and important recommendations to consider while preparing an ERC grant application. Informative presentations were delivered by ERC official representatives, grant holders and panel members. The role of National Contact Points was highlighted and NCPs from eastern partnership countries outlined existing situation and challenges in terms of engaging scientist in ERC calls. By hosting a significant regional event, Georgia reaffirms its readiness to dedicate efforts and facilitate its scientific community’s participation in different opportunities provided by Horizon 2020 program. Meeting with students

On March 23, 2017 Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation hosted the Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili State University, Mr. Giorgi Sharvashidze and TSU students. Deputy Director General of the science foundation Ms. Manana Mikaberidze introduced the SRNSF mission, objectives, activities and international cooperation to the meeting and described ongoing programs, new opportunities and the foundations plans ahead.

Meeting with Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia H.E. JI Yanchi

Meeting with Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia H.E. JI Yanchi took place at Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. Ambassador Yanchi, Attaché Ms. Liu Yitong and SRNSF representatives attended the meeting. During the meeting participants discussed future cooperation between the National Natural Science Foundation of China and SRNSF. Meeting of SRNSF and the representatives of the National Natural Science Foundation of China is scheduled in April 2017.

23-24 February – International Supervisory Board Meeting

On February 23-24 Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation held the 4th International Supervisory Board meeting. The Supervisory Board is a collegial body of the foundation which meets twice a year in order to guide and review the six month 's activity of the foundation and to discuss strategic issues and the action plan. Representatives of the Foundation delivered the summary report to the Supervisory Board along with the achievements, challenges and changes made with a recommendation of the Supervisory Board. Discussion topics included revised terms of the calls, the new grant programs (MG, SRNSF-DAAD and SRNSF-VW joint grant program), the 2017 calls and budget. The meeting also discussed the issues of applied research call, 2018 graduate School supporting project, 2018 Infrastructure Grant Program; Unified evaluation issues for 2017 calls, changes in monitoring the principles of the calls, working conditions for the employees and reimbursement issues, electronic database working process, productivity of the heads of funded projects (AR, FR, DI), CRDF Global-Problems created by the assessments of the (AR, FR, YS.).

Meeting with the representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Georgia

Director General of the SRNSF and the representatives of the foundation met with the representatives of U.S embassy in Georgia on 16 th of February. SRNSF, in collaboration with the Embassy, is planning to organize a conference regarding the popularization of science and innovation in Georgia. The conference will be held on 23 rd of April. Invited guests from Georgian public and private sectors and the attendees of the conference will discuss the opportunities and challenges of Georgian research and innovation ecosystem and the strategy of Georgian science development.

Launch Conference of Georgian Studies Programme at the University of Oxford

On 7 th of February, the Launch Conference of Georgian Studies Programme was held at the University of Oxford.  The launch conference included attendees such as the Georgian Ambassador in the United Kingdom - Tamar Beruchashvili, Rector of Ilia State University – Giga Zedania, Director General of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation – Marine Chitashvili. The Conference on Georgian Studies will be conducted annually. Georgian Studies Programme was founded on 23th of October, 2015, at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies of University of Oxford. Georgian Studies programme at University of Oxford is funded by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, in the frame of supporting Georgian studies at foreign universities programme. As stated in the agreement between SRNSF and University of Oxford, 3 Georgian scientists will be admitted to the program annually. Funding research centers on Georgian Studies will encourage the development of Georgian Studies and that of traditional Georgian fields, as well as the development of contemporary interdisciplinary research and its popularization in international scientific circles.

Prof. Marja Makarow meeting with the representatives of Georgian scientific centers and state universities

With support of the tool for institutional building managed by the European Commission, Prof. Marja Makarow  visited Georgia, Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. As part of her visit, Prof. Makarow aims to get acquainted with the Georgian STI system, with particular focus on Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation’s activities, its programmes and targeted initiatives. After several missions to Georgia, Prof. Marja Makarow will develop recommendations on how to improve science management system in Georgia. On January 11, an introductory meeting took place at SRNSF with participation of Georgian research centers and state universities. Parties exchanged information on current situation in Georgian research institutions and universities.

Annual conference – SRNSF’s activities and results for 2016 and future prospects

2016 annual conference “Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation: activities, results and future prospects” took place at Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel on December 19. SRNSF presented results of its national and joint 2016 programs/calls, activities related to multilateral programs, problems and challenges faced during project implementations, call evaluation procedures and criteria, report on Georgian scientists’ involvement in international grant programs, Foundation’s plans and future prospects for 2017, etc. Over 200 guests attended the conference, including Deputy Ministers of Education and Science of Georgia, University Rectors, Deputy Rectors and Heads of Departments, Directors of Research Institutions, National Contact Points of International Scientific Agencies as well as target groups involved in science development issues. The conference included four sessions followed by discussions. ISTC and STCU Governing Board Meetings

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) and Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) Governing Board Meetings were held at Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation’s Conference Hall, on December 6-7, 2016. They represent major organizations supporting development of Georgian science. Over the past 20 years, ISTC and STCU have financed up to 340 scientific projects with the budget of up to 50 million USD.

Horizon 2020 training seminar: How to prepare a Horizon 2020 Proposal

On November 8, 2016 training titled ‘How to prepare a Horizon 2020 proposal’ took place at Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation Conference Hall. The event was organized as part of the project –  ‘ STI International Cooperation Network for Eastern Partnership Countries – Inconet EaP ’ . Training Agenda included presentations and discussions on   Horizon 2020 Work Programme, widening the participation instruments, developing a project idea into a proposal etc. Training was attended by the representatives of the Georgian scientific and research institutions. The IncoNet EaP project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 609528.
