Presentation of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia on “Science” in frames of Education Reform

Mikheil Batiashvili- The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, Deputy Minister-Irina Abuladze and the Director General of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia- Zviad Gabisonia, held the presentation on “ Science” in frames of Education reforms.

Several important priorities have been identified:

  • Increasing budget of the grant calls in 2019
  • More integration towards the EU Research and Innovation system. In this regards, Georgia is planning to join EURAXESS, which will support capacity building and career development of Georgian universities and research centers.
  • Creation of EURAXESS-GEORGIA portal as part of the pan European system of EURAXESS.
  • Modifying the science management system in accordance with European Research Council (ERC) standards, inclusion of foreign experts in the evaluating process of research outcomes, supporting the use of technologies in science management.
  • Maximizing support to science-business links and commercialization of research outcomes.
  • Developing a flexible and efficient scheme for science funding by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia, diversification of funding by international donors.
  • For first time in 2019, state and private universities and research institutions in Georgia will be involved in ELSEVIER database with full access to its services funded by state resources:
  • Science Direct
  • SciVal finder
  • Scopus
  • Mendeley data
  • Announcing specific scholarship opportunities for Science communication:

- Georgian studies - scholarship named after Ekvtime Takhaishvili

- Social Sciences - scholarship named after Dimitri Uznadze

- Natural sciences - scholarship named after Niko Ketskhoveli

- Engineering and technology - scholarship named after Aleksandre Kartvelishvili

- Life sciences – scholarship named after Ivane Beritashvili

- Agriculture sciences – scholarship named after Davit Sarajishvili

 

  • Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia plans to initiate online scientific journal titled "Georgian Science". The journal will have an international editorial board, the blind review of the publications, and thematic editions of the scientific fields:
  • Georgian Science – Exact and Natural Sciences;
  • Georgian Science - Engineering and Technology;
  • Georgian Sciences - Life sciences, health and medicine, agricultural sciences;
  • Georgian Science - Humanitarian and social and sciences;
  • Administering of new grant calls in 2019:
  • Call for Young Inventors "Newton";
  • "Young scientists"
  • Photo Contest named after Alexandre Roinishvili
  • Art competition "Nikala".

The goal of the announced reforms is to enhance involvement of youth and in particular General educational institutions in scientific research - science should become a priority for the country.
