Geological -Technological Study and Assessment of Pyroclastic Rocks (Ignimbrites, Pumices and Ash Tuffs, Volcanic Ash) of Rhyolite and Dacite Composition of Kvemo Kartli for the Purpose of Their Utili

Cement is one of more demanded and popular construction material against the background of constantly extending construction business. At the same time, the cement industry of Georgia experiences extreme deficiency of mineral raw materials.

Annual production rate of cement in Georgia is approximately up to 3 million tons from where the need for active mineral (pozzolanic) admixture averages 600 – 700 thousand tons. More than 25 years qualitative pozzolanic admixture of high quality is deficiency in Georgia that has been caused by the geopolitical shifts, which have happened during this time.

The goal of the project: is to research and comprehensive study of mineral wealth of pyroclastic rocks (ignimbrites, pumices and ash tuffs, volcanic ash) of Kvemo Kartli as active mineral additive for cement and blend component in manufacturing of cement as well as decorative colored glass and ceramic tiles.

The Project represents joint geological- technological work, which since extraction of raw materials, comes to the end with creation of a concrete industrial product, i.e. the full production cycle turns out.

According to the program of the project pyroclastic rocks (ignimbrites, pumices and ash tuffs, volcanic ash) of rhyolite and dacite composition widespread in Bolnisi and Dmanisi districts are studied.

It has been established that cements of optimum composition turn out with additive from 6 to 35 mas. % of ignimbrites of fields of Kazreti, Guguti and Mushevani and also Kariani volcanic ash. The received cements correspond to the European standard (EN 197-1) on types: CEM II/A-P and CEM II/B-P, on durability class: 42,5 N, 32,5 N and 22,5 N.

Application of ignimbrit in cement production has been recognized as novelty and authors of the project have taken out the patent of Georgia for useful model - GE U 2016 1889.

It has been established that use of pyroclastic rocks as raw component of clinker by partial replacement of clay, increases the mechanical durability and sulfate resistance of cement.

On the basis of this geological search and technological researches of an ignimbrites of Kazreti and Guguti fields have been recognized suitable for cement production. On these areas detailed geological works have been carried out and geological cards of scale 1:10000 with the corresponding geological cuts are made, expected stocks are established.

On the basis of the studied rocks decorative glasses: avanturine glasses with cornel-colored- brownish surface film and colored muffled glasses have been received,

On the basis of the studied rocks avanturine glasses with cornel-colored-brownish surface film and colored muffled glasses have been produced, which will find application in dressing of internal rooms and facades of buildings. Also ceramic tiles for facing of floors and walls have been received.

The patent application on useful model: “The composition of avanturine glass” was received by the positive decision №14090/02.

For operating time over the project 4 publications, 2 patent applications have been prepared, the report at the international conference is given.

The conditional scheme of use of pyroclastic rocks of Kvemo Kartli in various branches of production of construction materials is submitted.

The expected results: implementation of the project, in particular in the cement industry, will give considerable practical and economic effects: local cement plants within a decade will be provided with cheap and qualitative pozzolanic admixture, expensive clinker with preservation of durability of cement will be saved, the sulfate resistance, water resistance and durability will increase, the product range will extend. Energy consumption on a cement grinding will decrease, as pyroclastic rocks are characterized by a good grindability. Аnd also their production won't involve big costs.

As a result all this will lead to decrease in factory prime cost of cement that will serve increase in their competitive capacity in comparison with foreign analogs. Respectively production income will raise.

Ensuring the market with pozzolanic cement, available at the price, will give the chance to builders to apply local products for construction of bridges, tunnels and some other constructions. Economic potential of branch and, respectively, the country will be increased. Construction materials will be ecologically clean.

The demand for high-quality, especially sulphate-resistant cements is high in neighboring countries (Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan), where construction in general and, in particular, road and hydrotechnical industry develops in fast pace. So, in the case of production of local competitive cements, export of cement from Georgia to these countries will grow.

Production of decorative glass and ceramic tiles is significantly less than cement production, although the cost price of the latter is much higher. Use of decorative materials increases esthetic appeal of construction objects that, in turn increases the market value of these constructions. It is expected that in the case of manufacturing of new, effective and high artistic value wares, these products will obtain its place in the world market as well.
