3rd International Spring School "Abkhazia: From the Ancient times to the Present (Historical-Culturological Aspects)"

We are pleased to inform you that the International Spring School "Abkhazia: From Ancient Times to the Present (Historical-Culturological Aspects)", will be held from June 16 to 22, 2024.

Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts welcomes foreign and Georgian researchers and students (MA, PhD) interested in Georgian history and culture, whose scientific interests correspond to the main scientific-research directions of the National Centre of Manuscripts (classical and/or ancient Georgian philology, source studies, archival studies, manuscript and  book culture, restoration, digitalization, etc.).

For the third time, this project is being implemented in collaboration with Sokhumi State University, with financial support from the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation within the framework of the "A Grant Competition Supporting 2023 Georgian Occupied Territories Studying National Research Projects and International Scientific Events." The main goal of the project is to comprehend the history of the occupied territory of Georgia and its integral part, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, based on contemporary scientific criteria.

We aim to discuss existing topics, determine prospective research perspectives, develop collaborative relations, and involve young scientists in the research of the issues related to Abkhazia. This year, for the first time, the school's schedule covers the period from ancient times to the present day.

The spring school program is dynamic and includes six learning modules. 1. Understanding the terms "Abkhazia" and "Abkhazian." 2. Abkhazia: From Ancient Times to the Present (a new module in the program). 3. Abkhazia: From the "Kingdom of Abkhazia" to the occupied territory. 4. Existence in Abkhazia: An ethnological excursion (a new module in the program). 5. Abkhazia: Cultural Heritage. 6. Abkhazia in the Collections of the National Centre of Manuscripts.

In addition to lectures and workshops, we have planned round table and panel discussions, as well as field trips to visit historical monuments related to the topics. Distinguished Georgian scientists and international researchers will share their research results and methodology with Georgian and foreign participants.

  • The working languages of the school are Georgian and English. Lectures and other activities will be conducted with the support of simultaneous translation. Applicants will be selected through a competitive process.
  • The National Centre of Manuscripts will cover participants' expenses, including accommodation and food; individuals are responsible for their travel costs to and from Tbilisi,

The filled Application Form should be sent to this e-mail address: abkhazia.school@manuscript.ge. no later than the 10th of March, 2024.  Selected candidates will be notified by the 15th  of  March, 2024.
