Scientific research of the Iberian-Caucasian languages dates back to a long time. Many researches have been conducted in order to study the languages in the synchronic as well as diachronic point of view. The Georgian scientists’ contribution is important in this respect; hundreds of monographies and textbooks and thousands of articles have been published concerning the actual issues of the structure of Kartvelian and mountainous Caucasian languages.

While the success in terms of studying the phonetic system and grammar of the Iberian-Caucasian languages is obvious, we see a different picture in case of lexicography. We especially lag behind in terms of translation dictionaries. There were no dictionaries but only the Abkhazian-Georgian, Georgian-Abkhazian and Chechen-Georgian ones untill recently. Aimed at improving the unfortunate situation, the first steps were made. In particular, we mean the project with a title ‘Caucasian-Georgian Dictionaries with linguistic comments, index and grammatical studies’ financed by Shota Rustaveli National Scientific Foundation. Within the framework of the project six dictionaries were prepared at TSU Arnold Chikobava Linguistic Institute: Abkhazian-Georgian (compiler N. Machavariani), Circassian-Georgian (V. Shengelia), Ingush-Georgian (R. Pareulidze), Avar-Georgian (L. Azmaiparashvili), Bezhit-Georgian (N. Ardoteli) and Udi-Georgian (R. Lolua) (see: http://ice.ge/of/?page_id=275). Each dictionary includes about 5000 dictionary-entries. Each dictionary has an index; linguistic comments (qualifications) and relevant illurtative material are given at each dictionary-entry, onomastic material (anthroponyms, ethnonyms, toponyms) and brief grammatical studies are added to the dictionaries.
