Joint call for “Georgian Studies Research programme” of SRNSFG and the University of Oxford

Aim of the Call:

a) To support the advancement and international visibility of Georgian Studies, including the traditional disciplines of Kartvelology, while promoting contemporary disciplinary and interdisciplinary research within the international scientific community.

b) To attract early-career researchers, strengthen their research capacity, and disseminate the results of studies on Georgia's history, culture, language, literature, archaeology, art, religion, and socio-economic and political transformations through international academic networks.

c) To foster sustainable international collaboration by promoting research partnerships and consortia based on contemporary studies of Georgia and the wider region.

Call Conditions:

The grant call provides funding for research projects at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, Russian and East European Studies (REES), University of Oxford, in the following fields: anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, international relations, history, art, religion, society and culture, as well as research on the Oliver and Marjory Wardrop Collection of the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford.

The grant call provides funding for two projects: one in the field of social sciences and humanities, and the other focusing on research of the Oliver and Marjory Wardrop Collection.

Eligibility:

a) Under the Social Sciences and Humanities category, applicants must be Georgian citizens who obtained a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in the relevant field on or after 1 January 2020.

b) Under the Oliver and Marjory Wardrop Collection Research category, applicants must be Georgian citizens holding a doctoral degree (or equivalent).

The budget for each project is £30,000 (the equivalent in GEL).

The grant funding covers:

a) Invited Researcher's Scholarship – the equivalent in GEL of GBP 20,000 (twenty thousand pounds sterling);

b) Administrative Costs for Project Implementation – the equivalent in GEL of GBP 10,000 (ten thousand pounds sterling).

 

Call administration calendar:

• Electronic registration of project proposals – from 28 July 2026 until 25 August 2026, 16:00;
• Submission of the application to the Foundation’s Chancellery – no later than 4 September 2026, 18:00;
• Eligibility check of the registered proposals for compliance with the competition requirements;
• Evaluation of project proposals by the Joint Commission of the Foundation and the University of Oxford (assessment of the application documents and interviews);
• Approval of the winning projects by an individual administrative-legal act of the Director General of the Foundation;
• Signing of the grant agreement.
