Georgian University Society

On December 15 at 11:00, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted the event related to restoring the Georgian University Society.  The society aiming to support development of the University, unites TSU alumni and its supporters. The society will be headed by successful Georgian scientist, Prof. Zaal Kokaia. Today the exhibition related to the establishment of “Georgian University Society” was held at TSU.

Georgian University Society was established in 1917 and it aimed at founding the first national university in the Caucasus region. The first gathering of the founders of the University Society was held in the apartment of Petre Melikishvili in Tbilisi on May 12, 1917. The Society that played a huge role in founding the university managed to raise necessary finances for founding the university. The work carried out by the university founders entered an active phase in autumn 1917. On October 3, 1917, Ivane Javakhishvili presented “The Regulations and Statutes” of the university to the inaugural assembly of Georgian University Society. On December 15, 1917 (old style December 2), the Transcaucasian Commissariat finally approved the regulations and eventually, 100 years ago, on December 15, 1917 (old style December 2), the Tbilisi State University was legally founded.
