"History of Georgia through the eyes of Oliver and Marjorie Wardrop"

On May 15, the winner of Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia 2019 call for research grants for young scientists, the winner of the Ekvtime Takaishvili Scholarship in the field of Georgian Studies, Doctor of Philosophy, Dean of the Free University’ School of Management and Social Sciences, Nikoloz Aleksidze,  for the professors of the same field, Foundation’s grantees  gave a remote lecture “History of Georgia through the eyes of Oliver and Marjorie Wardrop".

The conversation was related to the great role of Oliver and Marjorie Wardrop in the development of Kartvelology as a science, in the British-Georgian public-literary relations. There was a presentation about the activities of the Wardrops and their legacy - the Wardrop Collection of Georgian books and manuscripts, preserved in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, which contains the richest materials. Nikoloz Aleksidze noted that in the collection personal and public is interlinked, focusing on the role of the Wardrops in promoting Georgia and its culture, Oliver's role as an influential diplomat in the recognition of Georgia's independence by England in 1921, and the literary work of Marjorie Wardrop, translator of “The Knight in the Panther's Skin”. During the lecture it was noted that the Georgian texts preserved in the Bodleian Library are being digitized, which contributes to the popularization of Kartvelology among young European scientists, grantees of the Rustaveli Science Foundation are actively participating in scientific research. In the end, Nikoloz Aleksidze answered the numerous questions of the participants of the online meeting.
